Alankuda Beach
Hotel Rate : US$ 200 upwards (all inclusive) - Consideration
Alankuda Beach The founders of Ulpotha, the highly acclaimed retreat in the heartland of old Ceylon, together with a close friend renowned in the marine adventure and water sports worlds, have opened a unique and captivatingly quirky beach resort on the western peninsula of this tear-shaped island. Situated on an undiscovered and deserted two kilometer stretch of a pristine private beach, Alankuda Beach offers a truly relaxing, discrete and romantic getaway.

The azure, warm ocean is almost always mirror-calm and welcoming during the months of October to May. The coastal waters offer the treasures of dolphin and whale watching as well as snorkelling over nearby spectacular coral formations. In addition there is deep-sea fishing, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, kite and wind surfing. Alankuda Beach is situated 3 hours north of Colombo and just over 2 hours from the airport.

Distance From Colombo : 166 km
Accommodation and food: Alankuda Beach features a mix of four open-style single-roomed wattle and daub cabanas, two double roomed cottages, a striking open pavilion restaurant overlooking the Indian Ocean, a beach bar and a 40 meter fibre optic-lit pool - all laid out in a whimsical and intriguing mix of the traditional and the new. The food is generous and delicious local fare and the staff, are graciously hospitable and unobtrusive...
Alankuda Beach
Positive :
  • The place makes you really appreciate the art of doing nothing - pure relaxation
  • Deserted beach front
  • Very relaxing atmosphere
  • The staff appear to be there but not there, as they leave the guests alone and are therefore in no way encroaching on their privacy
  • The day could be spend on the beach at the Ambalama lazing around
  • If the guests need something you simply ring the bell at the Ambalama and your needs would thereafter be attended to
  • Lots of flora and fauna around despite being a beach location
  • Each guest has there own private little garden, which includes their bed room as one unit, their toilet and washbasin as one unit and their outdoor eco coconut tree shower area as the final unit, so it gives the impression of living with nature in your own private little world
  • The beach front is untouched, just a few fisherman pass by during the day going about their daily business and they don't bother with the guests at all
  • The boat house also offers a lounging area, just sit down chill and have a beer and look at the sea, its always warm but not unpleasant warm as the sea breezes are 24 7 365, so there's always the perfect comfort zone where the temperature is concerned
  • The boat house is well equipped with all the required facilities, life jackets, also has a range of water sports equipment available
  • The hotel offers and operates on an ALL INCLUSIVE BASIS, and this includes, breakfast lunch dinner, tea coffee, local liquor, beer, wine etc. you can have whatever you want at anytime of the day. This AI concept also includes whatever water sports equipment you wish to borrow for a stipulated period of time per day.
  • The AI also includes 1 boat ride out per day to see the dolphins (and if you are lucky whales too), this is best done in the early morning hours when the sea is at its calmest, OR 1 boat ride out to a near by reef for snorkelling (the reef is supposed to be one of the best in Sri Lanka as its completely untouched). The dolphins are actually the highlight of ones stay, and as the north west seas are calmest from November to April each year, it would be interesting to note how the property fairs during the summer months from May to October.
  • The property consists of 4 rooms (little garden units as explained above), at the moment (more rooms, another 4 actually, with en suite bathrooms are in the process of being built - also wattle and daub style and on the eco friendly concept, and it is hoped that these too would be completed by end of October 08).
  • These dbl rooms can also be used as singles, triples, or even turned into quadruplets to accommodate 4pax
  • Negative :
  • Takes 3, ᄑ hours to get there from Colombo (around 2, ᄑ hours from the Apt/Negombo OW)
  • Approach road - very bumpy and not too comfortable a ride (this carried on for around ᄑ an hour before you actually reach the hotel entrance/car park)
  • The area not marked out at all, no sign boards leading to the place to help a new comer
  • Turn of is prior to the 19th km milepost, way before Kalpitiya in actual fact (and this too not marked out)
  • The property itself is not marked out at all, not a sign to indicate where anything is, public toilets, rooms etc
  • Activities :
The main attraction at Alankuda Beach is the rare opportunity to see dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. You can go out in the early hours of the morning, as the improbably calm sea glitters under the gently rising sun, to search for playful dolphins and awe-inspiring whales. Water sports on offer include sailing, wind surfing, kayaking, canoeing, kite-surfing, deep-sea fishing and snorkelling. For those who wish to explore the land around them, a visit can be made to the small, nearby town of Kalpitiya. It's a vibrant and unspoiled fishing town with an interesting mix of historical buildings from its eventful colonial past.
